Please consider sending a short submission to the State Government to let them know your thoughts on the proposed expansion plans for Ormiston College.
For those of you who missed the news article published by Redland Bayside News on July 30th 2025, below is an excerpt.
“Should special rules apply for the College to be allowed to destroy protected Koala habitat? We do not believe this sets a good example for future generations considering Koalas are listed as ‘endangered’. A koala has been sighted most days in the past few weeks in trees that are earmarked for removal.”

The dark green areas on the map above shows how much habitat is mapped as protected ‘Core Koala Habitat’ and ‘High Ecological Value Wetland’.
The College expansion plans (see following link) will require the removal of 653 mature habitat trees to make way for new buildings and three new junior sports ovals.

RE: Submission for MID-0425-0938 Ormiston College
Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to make comment on the proposed expansion of Ormiston College in the Redlands and my concerns are outlined below:
• I strongly object to the clearing of more than 650 non-juvenile koala habitat trees.
• Many of the trees are mapped by the State Government as ‘Core Koala Habitat’ and much of the area proposed for clearing is mapped ‘High Ecological Value Wetland’.
• The Ormiston area is well known to have numbers of koalas, and this proposal does not seriously regard the impacts to them that will result with the loss of hundreds of trees.
• The proposal must be referred to the Federal Government for assessment under the Environment, Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC) as the ‘endangered’ koala will be significantly impacted by the proposed action of removing 652 habitat trees.
• The clearing of 31% of the Koala’s habitat on the site will have significant negative impacts on the koalas living in the Ormiston area.
• The replanting of 526 sapling trees will not negate the negative impacts that will result from the clearing of hundreds of mature koala habitat trees.
I thank you for the opportunity to comment.
Yours sincerely,
