Jagi and the huge Straddie fire is a book about the 2014 bushfire that devastated North Stradbroke Island. It was written to help children learn about a local history event in a way that is interesting to them. Local artist Elizabeth Burnett created amazing paintings to illustrate the story.
The fire burned out a larger area than the much-publicised Victorian fires, but received far less media attention largely because there was no loss of life or major property damage. Unlike the Victorian fires which burned themselves out, QFES managed to steer the fire towards an area where they could eventually control then extinguish it.
The island’s wildlife was decimated, and the effects will be felt for many years.
Proceeds from book sales are being donated to the North Stradbroke Island Rural Fire Service
