KAG Responses to SOUTH EAST QLD KOALA CONSERVATION STRATEGY 2026

SUBMISSION EXAMPLE – Information on KAG Responses and below can be copied for submissions
Dear Sir/Madam,
I write to make comment on the new South East Queensland Koala Conservation Strategy 2026-2036.
I support the Strategy being reviewed every five years rather than ten years, considering the dire predicament koala populations are in.
The decline of Redlands koala population by at least 80% over the past 25 years is proof of the current legislation failings.
The following deficiencies with existing koala regulations need to be addressed, and real changes made to legislation if there is any chance of halting population decline and koala numbers being able to recover:
• There are too many exemptions allowing excessive clearing of important koala habitat.

• Too much vital koala habitat is not mapped and therefore has no protection, especially partially cleared or even single tree areas in the urban areas which provide movement opportunities between areas of habitat.

• Environmental offsets must only be allowed in the local government area where the impact occurred, not hundreds of kilometres away.

• Monies collected from financial offsets should be invested back into the local government area where the impact occurred and go towards land acquisitions on like for like habitat.

• The limits to offsetting must be recognised where endangered species such as Koalas may be too vulnerable for offsetting to be appropriate.

• The Koala Strategy requires strong defined wording to prevent the risk of inconsistent application.

• There is too much reliance on landowners and developers to do the right thing with regards to compliance with clearing thresholds.

• Compliance and a mechanism to monitor exempted habitat clearing thresholds is vital for the new strategy to be effective.

• No detail is provided in the new Koala Strategy about new development definitions and thresholds.

I thank you for the opportunity to comment.

Yours sincerely,
