Wild Koala Day 2019 is on Friday 3d May 2019.
This is a day to celebrate koalas and protect their habitats.
To celebrate Wild Koala Day 2019 in Redland City, Redlands2030 is hosting a community event where people will have an opportunity to see for themselves a koala in the wild.
Join us at G.J. Walter Park in Shore Street East, Cleveland from 8:00 am for a light breakfast (sizzled sausage).
At about 8:30 a.m. we will go for a short (approximately 30 minutes) walk in the area around G.J. Walter Park.
A healthy colony of koalas live in this area which is close to the Toondah Harbour ferry terminal where vehicular ferries and water taxis depart for North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah).
While they are quite good at hiding, typically two or three koalas will be spotted sitting in their treetop homes at heights ranging from 10 to 25 metres.
Wild koalas living near Toondah Harbour have been photographed often over the past few years. More than 100 photos of the Toondah koalas can be viewed at #toondahkoalas on Instagram.
The Toondah koalas are currently being threatened by plans for building 3,600 apartments in the Toondah Harbour Priority Development Area.
Traffic and other disturbance from the residents of these proposed apartments are likely to have a devastating impact on koalas living in this area.
The background to this project is discussed in Toondah Harbour – the illustrated history.
